There's a joke in the arts that goes something like, "The true Artist's Way is to never finish The Artist's Way."
And honestly, I get it.
The Artist's Way, written by Julia Cameron, is a 12-week journey designed to help people reconnect with their creativity, work through creative blocks, and recover their sense of self as an artist.
Through practices like Morning Pages, Artist Dates, and weekly exercises, the book invites us to look inward, nurture our inner child, and rediscover the joy of creating without judgment.
But here's the thing: it requires commitment.
Many people start the book with the best intentions, only to find themselves struggling to keep up with the work. Life gets busy, old habits creep back in, and without someone holding us accountable, it's easy to put our creative practice on the back burner.
I know because I was one of those people.
I tried starting The Artist's Way several times and never made it past week three.
That is, until I gathered a group of some of my closest friends, who all happened to be unemployed at the time, and we decided to go through it together.
We created a virtual space where we met weekly, checked in on our progress, shared our experiences, and encouraged each other to keep going.
Some of us fell behind at times, but there was never any judgment. We simply reminded each other why we started and made space to keep showing up.
And what unfolded over those 12 weeks was pretty incredible.
One of my friends, who was studying film, landed a full-time social media management position using his editing skills. Another created enough artwork to participate in an art market and left having sold almost everything she brought.
I attended an artist residency, and my partner reconnected with her love of drawing.
All four of us experienced tremendous growth, personally, spiritually, and creatively.
It wasn't that the book magically made these things happen. It was that we were consistently making space for ourselves, nurturing our creativity, and supporting one another as we pursued the things that mattered to us.
Seeing the blessings that unfolded when we committed to ourselves and maintained that space together was incredibly inspiring.
It reminded me just how powerful creativity and community can be when we make them a priority.
Who is The Artist's Way for?
Despite its name, The Artist's Way isn't just for professional artists.
It's for anyone who feels disconnected from their creativity, stuck in a rut, or curious about what might happen if they started making more intentional space for themselves.
Maybe you used to love drawing but haven't picked up a pencil in years. Maybe you're navigating a life transition, experiencing burnout, or struggling to make time for the things that bring you joy.
Or maybe you've always wanted to explore your creativity but never felt like you were "good enough" to call yourself an artist.
This book challenges that idea.
It invites us to let go of perfectionism, explore our creative interests, and reconnect with the parts of ourselves that sometimes get buried beneath the responsibilities of everyday life.
You don't need to have a particular artistic skill or creative goal to benefit from the experience. You just need curiosity, an open mind, and a willingness to show up for yourself.
Finding your creative community
After experiencing the impact of going through The Artist's Way with my friends, I knew I wanted to do it again.
This time, I wanted to open that experience up to a new group of people, bringing my background as an artist, educator, and creative wellness facilitator into the process.
My goal is to create the same kind of supportive, judgment-free space that helped me finally make it through the book.
A space where we can check in with one another, celebrate our wins, talk through our challenges, and encourage each other to keep creating, even when life gets messy.
Because sometimes the hardest part of developing a creative practice isn't figuring out what to make.
It's giving ourselves permission to make the time for it.
And sometimes, having a community of people who are doing the same thing makes all the difference.
Whether you're an experienced artist, a recovering creative, or someone who simply wants to reconnect with themselves, you're welcome here.
